Sometimes, dressing for work can be quite confusing especially when you are new to the organizational culture and its formal environment. While some feel that you cannot really ‘dress up’ to work, it is possible to be creative within the given paraphernalia for formal dressing.
White blouse with black knew length skirt, or a checks or stripped shirt with black trousers, blazers, scarves, formal leather belts are some of the different attires which are perfect to go to work. A black trouser is must in your wardrobe. Indian dresses like salwar kameez, churidar kurta, sarees are also considered formal and can be worn at the work place. In some industries (e.g. advertising agencies especially in the creative department) wearing formal is not compulsory. People dress in casual clothing like jeans, skirts etc teamed up with a tunic or a shirt. Hence, before joining office, try to find out about the kind of dressing that is desirable in that organization.
Another thing that one should keep in mind is that comfort is absolutely necessary when ones mind is at work for hours at stretch. If your clothing is not comfortable, you be not be at ease and may not be fully able to concentrate on the work. Clothing at work should neither be too tight nor too loose. Fitting is very important. It should fit you just perfect. They should also be clean and ironed.
Another point to note while dressing formally is to wear and carry the right kind of accessories. Avoid wearing any heavy/jazzy or right-in-the-eyes kind of accessories. Wear something that is small at the same time elegant. Also, carry the right kind of bag. You will need to shop for a formal bag in case you do not have one. Generally black or brown is preferable as it mostly goes with what you wear.
Last but not the least, colours are also important. Jazzy colours should be avoided when going to office. Organizational atmosphere prefers colours like black, white, grey, navy blue etc. But these days, new shades like baby pink and light yellow are also in. Mix and match and be innovative even within formal dressing at work place!
